You have probably heard of your “core”, but maybe not of the Pelvic Floor. The Pelvic Floor is one of the muscles which make up your core.
These muscles are like a hammock in the pelvis which extend from the sits bones to the pubic bone to the tailbone.
One of the functions of the Pelvic Floor is to support the pelvic organs – the bladder, the bowel and in women the uterus.
If these muscles become weak, problems can arise with bladder control. Symptoms that women commonly notice are:
-stress incontinence (peeing when sneezing, laughing, lifting or jumping)
-increased frequency of need to urinate
-increase urgency to urinate
-prolapse – which is a feeling of heaviness/fullness/sagging or discomfort in the pelvic/vaginal area
The good news is that you can strengthen your Pelvic Floor by improving posture, increasing back/hip flexibility as well as doing Kegel and correct abdominal exercises.
I teach a technique called Hypopressive exercise. Hypopressives include breathing, posture and strengthening of the abdominals to decrease (hypo) the pressure on the Pelvic Floor.
